Our Philosophy
People are bio-individual — whole, complex, and largely unseen.
Great people strategy honors the full human, not just the fraction that shows up at work.
At The Luminary Architect, we believe that most organizations build their people strategy on a fraction of who their employees actually are. Like an iceberg, what is visible at work — performance, output, behavior — represents only a small portion of the whole person. The rest — values, wellbeing, lived experience, identity, purpose — shapes everything.
We build people strategy for the whole person. That means designing organizations with both rigor and humanity — where culture is intentional, leadership is developed with care, and the human at the center of every decision is never forgotten.
This philosophy is not separate from business strategy. It is business strategy.
What We Believe
-
People-first is not soft — it is the most sophisticated business decision a leader can make.
-
Trust, ownership, and accountability are not risks. They are the foundation of high performance.
-
Organizational health and individual wellbeing are not competing priorities — they are the same priority.
-
The future of work demands HR strategy that is human, adaptive, and designed to evolve alongside AI and the changing workforce.
-
Every engagement works best when built on genuine partnership, shared values, and mutual trust.

Meet The Founder
For more than twenty-five years, Felise Matlock Brown has been in the room where the most consequential people decisions get made — and she has watched organizations make them with an incomplete picture of the human being at the center.
She has led people strategy at Google, Bank of America, GE/NBCUniversal, PepsiCo, and Citigroup — operating at the Director and SVP level across technology, financial services, media, and consumer products, advising C-suite executives and boards across 15 countries. She has seen what world-class HR looks like from the inside. She has also seen its most consistent blind spot.
Most organizations build people strategy around a fraction of who their people actually are. They optimize performance without asking what sustains it. They design culture without fully accounting for the humans that culture is meant to hold. The gap between organizational ambition and the whole person required to carry it — that is where Felise does her most important work.
Her training as a certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, certified Life Coach, classically trained chef, and doctoral candidate in Holistic Medicine is not a footnote to her HR practice. It is the reason TLA Co. is different. She has spent years studying the integration of soul, body, and mind — not as a wellness philosophy, but as a working framework for understanding what human beings actually need to perform, lead, and sustain. When you hold that lens alongside 25 years of enterprise HR, you stop designing organizations for the fraction that shows up at work and start building strategy for the whole person. That is what sustainable performance actually requires.
The Luminary Architect Co. is the firm she built to do this work — beginning, always, by meeting the organization where it is. Her personal vision has always been to walk alongside people in moments that matter, to support them in achieving the greatness already within.
The Luminary Architect is that vision at the scale of the organization.
Who We Serve
The Luminary Architect partners with leaders and organizations at a moment of meaningful inflection — those who know that getting people strategy right is the difference between good and extraordinary.
Small Business
10–75 employees. Has outgrown founder-led HR. Needs structure, culture foundation, and strategic guidance to scale responsibly. May be first-time HR client.
Series A/B Startup
Post-funding, scaling fast. Culture is at risk of drift. Needs a senior HR voice at the leadership table without the cost of a full-time executive hire.
Mid-Market
100–500 employees navigating growth, restructuring, M&A, or leadership transition. Has HR operations but lacks strategic senior HR leadership.
Mission-Driven & DEI-Focused
Organizations where values, culture, and inclusion are strategic priorities — not compliance checkboxes. Includes nonprofits, social enterprises, and purpose-driven companies.
The Leader We Partner With
The Luminary Architect's ideal client leader is someone who:
-
Leads with high integrity and clear vision
-
Communicates openly and listens genuinely to their team
-
Trusts their people and invites collaboration
-
Believes in the product or service they offer
-
Sees people strategy as a business imperative, not a support function
-
Is aligned — or willing to align — with values that honor the whole person
Engagements work best when trust is mutual. We take on clients whose work we believe in and whose values we share.

Strategic HR Advisory — right for you if:
You have operational HR covered and what you need is a trusted senior voice at the strategic level — available consistently, without requiring day-to-day engagement. You can self-direct between sessions.

Nonprofit & Mission-Driven Organizations
The Luminary Architect holds a specific commitment to serving nonprofit and mission-driven organizations — not as an afterthought, but as a core part of our practice.
Many nonprofits carry significant people complexity — multi-generational workforces, grant-driven hiring cycles, DEI mandates, leadership transitions, and culture challenges — with little to no dedicated HR leadership. This is where strategic HR advisory can have disproportionate impact.
STANDARD RETAINER
Full Advisory Essentials or Advisory Partner retainer at published rates. Many nonprofits fund fractional HR through operational grants — we can provide documentation to support grant applications.
MISSION RATE
Reduced-rate engagement for select nonprofits whose mission aligns deeply with our values. Limited availability — 1 mission-rate client at a time. Awarded based on organizational fit and mutual alignment.
PRO BONO
Limited pro bono capacity reserved annually for organizations at the intersection of community, equity, and wellbeing. Nomination and application-based. Details available upon request.

Series A Startup · 48 People · People Strategy
THE SITUATION
A 48-person SaaS company closes its Series A. The founding team built something real — and now has 90 days to prove they can scale it. The culture that worked at 12 is beginning to fracture at 48, and there is no senior HR voice at the leadership table.

FROM
A founder managing growth by instinct.
Reactive people decisions made without a strategic framework.
Culture defined by proximity, not intention.
A team that built the product — but may not be the team that scales it.
No one is saying that out loud.

TO
A people strategy built for the next stage of growth, not the last one.
A leadership team aligned on culture before it drifted further.
Clear frameworks for performance, accountability, and talent development.
A senior HR hire made at exactly the right moment — with the right profile.
The founder back in the seat she was built for.

Small Business · 40 People · People Infrastructure
THE SITUATION
A professional services firm. 40 people. Eight years of growth driven entirely by the founder’s relationships, reputation, and will. She has been the de facto HR director, culture keeper, and conflict resolver for all of it. Two high performers have left in the last 18 months — and she knows something is structurally wrong, but doesn’t have time to figure it out alone.

FROM
A founder talented at everything except letting go of the things slowing the business down.
No consistent performance framework.
Compensation decisions made case by case.
A culture that exists in the founder’s head — but hasn’t been codified, communicated, or designed to outlast her direct involvement.

TO
A people infrastructure that no longer depends entirely on the founder to function.
A clear culture narrative that attracts aligned talent and makes misaligned hires visible early.
Performance and compensation frameworks the team understands and trusts.
A business that feels like it was built to last — because now it was.

Nonprofit / Mission-Driven · 175 People · Organizational Health
THE SITUATION
A 175-person nonprofit, six months into a new Executive Director’s tenure. She inherited a fractured culture, a purely administrative HR function, and a leadership team that had never operated as a cohesive unit. Staff turnover is rising, board pressure is mounting, and the mission is undeniable — but internal instability is putting grant-funded programs at risk.

FROM
An organization whose external impact far exceeds its internal health.
HR as compliance function, not strategic partner.
A leadership team operating in silos, without shared language or accountability structures.
Staff who believe in the mission but are exhausted by the dysfunction.
An Executive Director trying to lead transformation while managing crisis.

TO
HR elevated from administrative to strategic — a function that now shapes culture, not just manages policy.
A leadership team redesigned and aligned around a shared operating model.
Staff retention measurably improved.
The Executive Director leading from her actual seat.
An organization whose internal health now matches the scale of its mission.

What We Advise On — Not Produce

Employee handbooks or policy manuals
-
HR compliance documentation
-
Job description libraries
We will always point you to the right resources for these needs and advise on what is required.

The Luminary Ecosystem
The Luminary Architect exists within a broader philosophy — one that recognizes organizations and the individuals within them are not separate systems. They are deeply connected.
The Luminary Architect serves the organization.
Sanctuary of Self serves the individual.
One client. Two doors. Whole transformation.
For select clients where organizational and individual wellbeing work naturally converge, The Luminary Architect and Sanctuary of Self can serve as complementary partners — The Luminary Architect designing the people strategy at the organizational level, while Sanctuary of Self supports the high-performing women within that organization with individual wellness, recalibration, and return to self.
This convergence is not required for every engagement. It is available for the clients for whom it is exactly right.
